Grand Forks panel held illegal secret meeting

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says a Grand Forks advisory board has to make a transcript of an illegal meeting that the board held last June.

The board oversees the operations of the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. A recent audit found some questionable expenses, and board members held a closed meeting to discuss it.

Stenehjem says in a legal opinion on Wednesday that the secret meeting wasn't allowed by state law.

The opinion says the Alerus Center board and the Grand Forks city attorney have already acknowledged the meeting was illegal.

However, Stenehjem says a tape recording of the discussion is hard to listen to. His opinion says the recording must be transcribed, and the transcript made available to the public.
