Winter Travel: What you should have in your winter survival kit

(WDAY TV) - Appropriately, this week is Severe Winter Weather Awareness Week in North Dakota. It may be the perfect time for a refresher on getting ready for winter travel.

Obviously, heading out on the road in the winter, make sure you've got your cell phone with you. But don't solely rely on it because as you get outside of town sometimes the coverage gets spotty, and sometimes even if you get in touch with somebody, they may not be able to get to you if the roads are too bad.

You want to have a winter survival kit with you in the car. A few of the thing I'd include, a blanket to help keep you warm, a shovel to get you unstuck, have some food with you because you don't know how long you'll be in the car, and keep a can with a lighter and some candles. That way you can melt a little snow to have something to drink.

If you're in the car for a long time, run the engine every 10 minutes every hour, but keep the tailpipe clear so no exhaust backs up into the car. Another thing, keep the window cracked to get some fresh air and with the weather we may be having, with snow and strong winds, particularly that wet snow, make sure you brush off your headlights so people can see you coming down the road.
