Goehring, Boucher competing for ND agriculture job

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring (GOHR'-ing) hopes his incumbency will help him avoid losing his third race for the job in six years.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring (GOHR'-ing) hopes his incumbency will help him avoid losing his third race for the job in six years.

Gov. John Hoeven appointed Goehring last year after Roger Johnson resigned. Johnson beat Goehring in two elections while he was agriculture commissioner.

This year Goehring is running against Democrat Merle Boucher (boo-SHAY').

Goehring says he concentrates on agricultural research, promoting farm products and keeping track of federal rules.

Boucher wants to put more emphasis on the agriculture commissioner's work with the state Water Commission and the Industrial Commission.

He says the Industrial Commission should push for more aid to western North Dakota to ease the strain on the region's roads and public works because of oil development.
