ND secretary of state: Tough race for low-key job

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Secretary of State Al Jaeger often says his obsession with details makes him well suited to his job's record-keeping duties.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Secretary of State Al Jaeger often says his obsession with details makes him well suited to his job's record-keeping duties.

But Democratic challenger Corey Mock says Jaeger's self-image isn't justified.

He says the Republican incumbent has made critical mistakes. He's left one candidate off the June primary ballot because of a paperwork mix-up, and a technology project has been delayed for years.

Jaeger says this campaign is probably his most difficult out of 18 years in office. But he says he's at peace because he thinks his office has been run well and Mock's criticisms have been taken out of context.

Mock says if this wasn't a difficult year for Democrats on the ballot he might have the race won.
