Fire investigators at the scene of damaged Fargo apartment building

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Fire crews are investigating how a South Fargo apartment fire sprawled across an entire third floor, ruining much of the building's 62 apartments. Fargo's fire marshal initially said the fire started on the first floor, around the middle of the Galleria on 42nd Apartments.

Someone was believed to be grilling, and the fire moved up rapidly, igniting propane tanks. Investigators today would not confirm anything, saying they still have to interview residents and recreate the scene.

They do say that it was an exterior fire that was escalated by the vinyl siding: a more flammable type of siding. Authorities got the call around 5:45 last night and the fire quickly spread, turning into a 5 alarm fire.

Two firefighters had to be rescued when a third floor roof collapsed. Total damage estimates are still not known.

Residents will be allowed in, starting around noon today with proper identification. They will be escorted by fire fighters to get belongings. Many on the third floor will not be able to get into their apartments, but fire fighters will grab important belongings for them.
