Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - On day 3 of the Extreme Makeover in Moorhead, some incredible progress. This is what it looked like Tuesday night. The basement was poured and flooring in.
Early today, walls went up on the Grommesh home. By this afternoon, the home was looking like a real home. Windows went in, a roof with shingles, an incredible transformation of an empty lot in just 3-days.
As volunteers from Extreme Makeover worked like an orchestra to put up walls and rooftops today, one group of young carpenter's got a crash course in community service and home building.
Producers with the Extreme Makeover show will tell you, no talented, willing volunteers then no TV show. As producers found out today, some of the most eager carpenters haven't even finished school.
“Flush with the outside and those go in there.”
If you are going to learn the carpentry trade, why not help put up a house in four days. Close to 30 M-state students, who have been learning how to be carpenters, today had a little on the job training as they came to the Grommesh home to help turn an empty lot into a dream home.
“I think it’s great. I watch the show all the time. It is fun to see how it is done.”
GERAN RICKM-STATE MOORHEAD: “The experience is that at work they say they usually do things slow and perfect, but here they are do things fast and perfect. Get it right the first time.”
Just yards from where crews put in Garrett's new therapy pool, the M-state students, some just months into the program, put their heart and soul into a day of service. Out of the classroom, and into the real world of building homes and lives.
JACOB LIEBLM-STATE MOORHEAD: “That is why we are here, just helping this family out and this kid out.”
Most of them just out of high school, some great lessons learned here on this site today. A lot of them had nothing to do with picking up a hammer. To be part of this community and this house, it is going to be an amazing feeling.
