Extreme Home Makeover: Entire neighborhood becomes part of makeover

Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - When Extreme Makeover comes to town, an entire neighborhood is changed. Thousands of volunteers, truckloads of concrete, lumber and equipment take over. WDAY 6 Reporter Kevin Wallevand is back live at the scene of Extreme Makeover tonight. He joins us live with more on those neighbors who are going above and beyond to help.

Days before the work begins, homeowners near the Grommesh house were asked to take part in the big makeover knowing there would be sacrifices to be made. Some took it to an extreme level.

Yet another Extreme Makeover Tent went up today a block from the Grommesh home.

“Take care of all the guys who are working hard.”

It's hard to tell, but someone is living behind all these tents and all this activity.

“Anything they would need inside and out to make this possible.”

CoCo Paulson is still living here, but she gave up all privacy and her driveway and her yard and her home, all to help the cause.

COCO PAULSONGROMMESH NEIGHBOR: “I would do it for any of our neighbors community pulling together to make this possible.”

The thing about CoCo is she knows the Grommeshes and so why not pay it forward.

“They have taken care of the neighborhood and the community.”

CoCo even opens up her garage to volunteers. Sunrise and sunset, CoCo's garage here has become coffee central. 24/7 she is allowing us to come and go day and night even when she is sleeping she lets us come and go. Those who are volunteering in CoCo's front yard say the good neighbor could not be more accommodating.

“She would rather come out and make sure we are okay.”

In a few days, the peace and tranquility of the south Moorhead neighborhood will return, but for now, Hollywood is here and CoCo is happy to be a part of it.

“That is what makes everything feel good that we are a community that cares.”

Another bright sunny day is just what builders and producers ordered for the Extreme Makeover at the Grommesh site. The Executive Producer for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition told us the work now begins as all the trades move in to do their specialty work.

The basement walls are in and the floor has been poured. Once the walls and roof are on, all contractors will take their place and work to get a four month project done in just days.

“This is really challenging because you have all the trades, 106 hour build schedule and at the same time you have excavation, framing, plumbing, and dry wallers who are not used to working together it is like a concert and a symphony all performing at once.”

Producers of the show say they have worked for several weeks with city officials to get the proper permits and road closure requests taken care of.
