BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Game and Fish Department says the first mountain lion of the season has been killed, in Dunn County.

The 2- to 3-year-old adult female weighing about 85 pounds was shot Sept. 27 in the Killdeer Mountains.

Furbearer biologist Stephanie Tucker tells The Bismarck Tribune that the cat was shot by an area rancher who was scouting elk.

The mountain lion was killed in Zone 1, which roughly encompasses the Badlands and has a quota of 10 lions. Zone 2 covers the rest of the state and has no limit.

The mountain lion season runs through March 31.
