Consultant suggests changes in ND state worker pay

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A consultant says pay raises for North Dakota state employees should be more closely linked to their job performance.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A consultant says pay raises for North Dakota state employees should be more closely linked to their job performance.

A legislative committee commissioned a report on North Dakota's pay system, and lawmakers are hearing the results Thursday.

Neville Kenning is a vice president for the Hay Group consultancy. He says most North Dakota government workers get the same percentage pay increase each year.

Kenning says if a worker's pay is already comparable to private business wages, the state employee's pay increase should depend on the quality of his or her work.

Kenning says North Dakota employees often earn less than workers in private business, and he says a good state benefit package doesn't make up the difference.
