Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - It was an event 3-years in the making. Loved ones of Staff Sergeant Andrew Nelson dedicated a new running track in his honor.

Nelson was killed in August of 2007 while serving his third tour of duty in Iraq. He was avid runner and former Saint Joseph's student and a Shanley High grad. Family and friends helped raise money to build the new running track near St. Joseph's.

"We've built something. We've made a difference in this community and we've done it all together. Not just the committee, but all of the people that were here today and all of our 200 donors. What a remarkable accomplishment."

A granite memorial for Nelson will be erected at the track in the coming months.
