BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An energy company has permission to build a major expansion of its natural gas processing plant in northwestern North Dakota.

Amerada Hess is upgrading its plant to process 250 million cubic feet of natural gas daily. It is now handling about 80 million cubic feet per day. Public Service Commission Chairman Kevin Cramer says the company is spending about $500 million on the expansion.

The PSC approved siting plans for the project on Wednesday. Commissioner Tony Clark says it should be finished by mid-2013.

Clark says Hess is planning to bring in housing units for the 300 to 500 construction workers who will be building the plant. A booming oil industry has caused a housing shortage in northwestern North Dakota.
