(WDAY TV) - A judge has given the OK for a Twin Cities attorney to quit representing a man accused of killing a Moorhead woman nearly 20 years ago.

Clarence Burcham is accused of fatally strangling Sharon Stafford in 1993. Defense attorney Tracy Eichhorn-Hicks says Burcham's family hasn't been able to pay him and says he’d like to continue representing Burcham, but can't afford to without payment.

Clay County Attorney Brian Melton says if Eichhorn-Hicks quits, it will be like starting over. The judge gave the family a week to come up with the money to keep Eichhorn-Hicks; otherwise he will appoint a public defender.
