Bison Football: Youngsters steal the spotlight at scrimmageFargo, ND (WDAY Sports) – NDSU scrimmaged this morning and while the battle for starting quarterback raged on, it was one of the youngsters that stole the spotlight.
Former Wahpeton star Ryan Smith got the scrimmage started with a bang. On the opening play of the scrimmage, he returns the kick from a couple yards deep in the end zone all the way for the touchdown!
He would later return a punt for a TD, so the freshman adjusting quite well to the college game.
The offense showed some flashes today. Brock Jensen in at QB goes to the corner of the end zone for the big fella Matt Veldman. He brings in this touchdown catch!
Jose Mohler got in later and showed off his quickness, getting out of pressure and then throwing a dart to Gary Williams who makes a couple nice moves to find the end zone.
The talk of the day was about the freshman Ryan Smith.
“Today, you kind of have to prove what's going on. Prove that you know what you're doing. I think a lot of freshman did that today. We did some live practices during practice and they definitely hit a lot harder in college than high school. That's kind of tough too. I got my clock cleaned a couple time today.”
Smith also ran the ball 7 times today for 18 yards.
