PSC candidate: ND should pay for new power lines

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Public Service Commission candidate Brad Crabtree says the state would promote wind power exports by paying for major upgrades of the state's transmission lines.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Public Service Commission candidate Brad Crabtree says the state would promote wind power exports by paying for major upgrades of the state's transmission lines.

Crabtree suggests using North Dakota's Transmission Authority to finance the project. The Democratic candidate says state ownership of high-capacity transmission lines is better that subsidizing private industry.

Crabtree says unless North Dakota moves quickly it could lose the chance to greatly expand its wind power industry and sell the energy to eastern states. He says some eastern states are developing their own wind power even though they're less efficient producers.

Crabtree is opposing Republican Public Service Commissioner Kevin Cramer. Cramer says there are already proposals to upgrade electric transmission lines and North Dakota taxpayers don't need to pay for them.
