BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring is encouraging gardeners around the state to keep local food shelves in mind as they harvest the year's produce.

Goehring says his department is encouraged by the number of calls it has been getting from people who say they want to donate some fruits and vegetables.

Goehring says whether it's through community or backyard gardens, the sharing of produce is happening more often.

He says school gardens around North Dakota also are doing well. The gardens produce food for school lunch programs. Goehring says students who helped plant them in the spring will see the fruits of their labors this fall.
