Mock: ND secretary of state pays too much overtime

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Democratic candidate for North Dakota secretary of state says Republican incumbent Al Jaeger spends too much on employee overtime.

Corey Mock calls the overtime spending "a clear sign of mismanagement." He says it hasn't stopped a paperwork backlog in Jaeger's office. Mock says Jaeger should look into hiring new employees or using temporary workers.

Mock held a Fargo news conference on Thursday. He says Jaeger's office records show he has paid more than 3,600 hours of overtime from July 1, 2009, through April. Two office directors got more than 1,100 hours of overtime combined.

Overtime costs 1½ times an employee's normal wage per hour. Mock wants to know how much of Jaeger's salary budget is paid as overtime. The secretary of state's office has 28 employees.
