Code Reds set for tornado warnings

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — An emergency notification system used heavily during the 2009 spring flood in the Fargo-Moorhead area is being expanded to include other weather disasters.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — An emergency notification system used heavily during the 2009 spring flood in the Fargo-Moorhead area is being expanded to include other weather disasters.

Residents of North Dakota's Cass County and Minnesota's Clay County who sign up for the "Code Reds" will be alerted by a prerecorded phone message in the event of a tornado. They also will have the option of receiving severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings.

The change comes after some people in the metro area said they couldn't hear tornado sirens during a severe thunderstorm in the early morning hours on July 27.

Leon Schlafmann, Fargo's emergency services coordinator, says the Code Red system is a good option for heavy sleepers.
