New version of sign code one step closer to becoming officialFargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The newest version of Fargo's sign code is one step away from becoming official. Tonight, members of the Planning Commission spent more than four hours, taking public comment that were sometimes very heated, and considering any changes that need to be made before forwarding it to the City Commission.
It was a minor victory tonight for people in the portable sign business. Planning commissioners decided to allow portable signs back in and advertise around apartment areas. They also made a compromise on the number of total days signs can be up.
Under the code that will go to the commission for approval, portable signs can a total of 84 days a year. Another big issue, which started the sign code debate are the electronic messaging or LED signs.
As it stands now, EMC signs can be close to a residential zoning area, but have to run a seven second static message board from 10:30 at night to six the next morning. While city leaders say they're trying to compromise, there are still people on both sides who aren't happy with the outcome and tonight; they were very vocal, sometimes raising their voices.
“But don't load this group, this committee of people who are against portable signs and have outwardly said so. They are against billboards, this is so unfair.”
“Get rid of it; get it out of your community because it's going to get nothing but worse.”
The earliest City Commissioners could see this new draft is August 23rd, but city planners say it might take longer because they want to go over this current proposal with a fine tooth comb so there are no problems.
