Moorhead man arrested for burglary after pushing through the screen on an open window

Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - Police arrested a 23-year-old Moorhead man this morning after he was scared off by a woman who he tried to rob. The woman not only prevented the man from getting in, but also helped police catch him.

Home break-ins and burglaries aren't all that rare, but physically keeping a burglar out and confronting them is. That's what one Moorhead woman did early this morning.

Brandon Lee Poitra was arrested after police say he tried to break into the ground floor apartment through a window around 3 am. He broke through a screen and was pushing on the window fan when the woman, who was inside reading, started pushing back.

Police say the suspect asked the woman for cigarettes, but she said she didn't have any. He left, but the woman provided a description so police were able to track him down quickly. It's not the usual method police recommend when you are faced with an intruder.

"We always advise that they don't try to confront the person. That they go to a safe place, call 911, try to give a good description. This just happened to be a very lucky situation in which the individual left right away."

Sergeant Swenson says there are locks you can buy to secure a window that has a fan in it. Just go you your local hardware store to find the right equipment. Poitra was in court this morning. He faces charges of burglary and a couple other misdemeanors.
