Classic cars damaged from hit and run accident

West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - People at a car show in West Fargo last night became witness to a hit and run accident. Police arrested 73 year old Laurence Phillips for drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident. 3 classic cars featured in the West Fargo car show were damaged by Phillips.

When Edward Wilt unloads his original Buick Skylark it catches eyes. Unfortunately for Wilt, his car didn't catch the attention of a drunken driver last night.

"I didn't understand how it could happen because the cones they had set up, but it happened and I'm a lot better today than I was yesterday, let’s just put that away."

Wilt has put 45 thousand dollars and a total of 6 years of work into his car, taking it to one car show after another, winning awards and showing off his unique vehicle.

"The demand for a Buick isn't out there like it is a Chevy or a Mopar and that's why I like the car. You don't see a whole lot of them out there."

Wilt says the hardest part about getting his Skylark back to how it was is that the parts he needs are not something you come by everyday.

“Nobody makes reproduction parts for these cars because the demand is not there and that means you have to rely on finding 40-year old parts that are in nice shape, not rusted hadn't been in an accident before."

Passionate about his car and upset at what happened, but Wilt can see past these marks.

"I'm just happy that nobody was in the way when this happened. It may take a little longer to build it again, but it will eventually get there and everybody is still walking and talking."

The damages could total anywhere between 14 to 18 thousand dollars.
