Carolina Hurricane Eric Staal helps former teammate with charity event

(WDAY Sports) - Yesterday Matt Cullen's Celebrity Weekend and Golf Scramble began and it wrapped up today with the kids' picnic out at Newman Outdoor Field.

As we told you yesterday, the money raised from this event goes to help children's healthcare needs with an emphasis on cancer.

Many of Matt Cullen's friends from the NHL were on hand for the event, including Carolina Hurricane Eric Staal. The 3-time all-star played with Cullen for three years from 2007 through the '09 season and for Staal, it was a no-brainer to come help his friend and former teammate with this charity event.

“We were fortunate or less fortunate to live right across the street from Matt and Brigdet playing in Carolina together. We became very close friends. This is something we attended last year, my wife and I. It's a great organization. Anytime you can give back to kids and the less fortunate it's a great opportunity and a lot of fun at the same time.”

The Cully's Kids event hopes to raise more than 400-thousand dollars through their efforts this weekend.
