Ground broken for a new track dedicated to a Moorhead soldier
Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - It was an emotional groundbreaking in Moorhead today for a new track dedicated to a hometown soldier who was killed in action.By: WDAY Staff Reports, WDAY
Family and community members gathered at Townsite Park today to remember Staff Sergeant Andrew P. Nelson, a Moorhead native who was killed in 2007 while serving in Iraq.
The $45-thousand dollar track will be built completely with community donations and will help honor the memory of Andrew who was an avid track and field athlete. Andrew's mom hopes the track and park renovation will help local families appreciate what they have.
“They're so used to daily life as they know it without the struggles, without the bombs dropping, without having to go for water for 2 or 3 miles or whatever, and I think it's just to realize what a great country and community we live in.”
The new track and park will also create green space for the neighboring Saint Joseph's School which Andrew attended. The track is slated for a September completion.
