Tribal translators from Rosebud, Pine Ridge, Cheyenne River, and Standing Rock reservations are consulting. They're voicing characters for 20 episodes of the Berenstein Bears.
The translators have been working on this since May. They are lucky to finish one episode a day. Experts say this is a way to revitalize the native language.
"The cartoon series is geared to young people and towards the youth and that's really the future of the language. The average age of the Lakota speaker is around 60-years old, and we need to figure out ways to reach children and the young people and a lot of young people like to watch television like North Dakota kids everywhere.”
The recordings could take six months. The episodes are expected to be broadcast in the Dakotas within a year.
