Bones found in ND belonged to American Indians

PARK RIVER, N.D. (AP) — A forensic anthropologist has identified human bones unearthed this spring near Park River as belonging to at least five American Indians.

Phoebe Stubblefield, of the University of North Dakota, says the bones belonged to three adults, a teenager and a 3-year-old. She says they've been buried for at least 50 years.

The bones were unearthed in May on a farm northwest of Park River. Walsh County Sheriff Lauren Wild has said the bones were found when a bulldozer operator was moving a rock pile atop a small knoll.

The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa plans to rebury the remains on their reservation. Historic preservation officer Kade Ferris says the bones were found about a mile from where the Chippewa Indians camped in the 1700s and 1800s.
