(WDAY TV) - Mahnomen County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Dewey, who was shot in the line of duty 17 months ago, has taken a turn for the worse. Deputy Dewey's doctors say he is on the verge of dying.

Right now, Dewey is in Hospice care and doctors have told family members that he only has days left to live. Dewey's uncle says a collapsed lung is putting too much pressure on his heart and he can't handle it.

In February of 2009, Dewey was shot twice in the abdomen and once in the head while responding to a call in Mahnomen. Thomas Fairbanks is facing several charges in the shooting, including attempted murder.

Daniel Vernier was sentenced to two years in prison for being an accomplice in the shooting.
