FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A 5-year-old girl who was rescued from a Richland County pond has died.

Fargo MeritCare Children's Hospital said Jade Curtis-Dean of Gwinner died about 3 a.m. Friday.

She had been saved Wednesday after going under the water at Mooreton Pond along Interstate 29 between Fargo and Wahpeton, but was listed in critical condition after the rescue.

Twenty-year-old Steve Huotari and his family had stopped at the pond along Interstate 29 on their way back to Fargo from Wahpeton, and were there when the girl went under the water.

Huotari was able to find her and pull her from the water, and he and his mother worked for about eight minutes to resuscitate the girl until emergency workers arrived to take over.
