Minn. couple accused in $1.2M theft

STILLWATER, Minn. (AP) — The Washington County Attorney's office has charged a Forest Lake woman with allegedly stealing $1.2 million while operating a real estate closing company. Her husband is accused of helping her in one of the transactions.

STILLWATER, Minn. (AP) — The Washington County Attorney's office has charged a Forest Lake woman with allegedly stealing $1.2 million while operating a real estate closing company. Her husband is accused of helping her in one of the transactions.

Fifty-three-year-old Cynthia Strand faces 34 counts of racketeering, theft by swindle, insurance fraud and aggravated forgery. Her husband, 52-year-old Steven Strand, faces five counts, including aiding and abetting theft by swindle.

The Strands were arrested Sunday night at their home and charged Monday in district court.

The Minnesota Department of Commerce investigated and claims Cynthia Strand took money that was intended to pay off previous mortgages on numerous properties and converted the funds for her own use.

The Strands were in jail Monday. Bail was set at $200,000 for Cynthia Strand and $50,000 for Steven Strand.
