Hit gas line forces evacuation at the Golden Living Center in Moorhead

Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - Some tense moments for residents of a Moorhead Nursing Home on Highway Ten today after a contractor hit a gas line. It happened outside the Golden Living Center on the city's east side. The leak sparked a massive emergency response.

While crews from Xcel worked feverishly to pinch off the leak, staff at the Golden Living Center evacuated more than a dozen residents of its assisted living center, moving them to the main area of the nursing home.

“A whistling sound coming and what is this and so my plant man and notified Mid-Continent and they were 20 feet away and they said get away.”

As a precaution, F-M Ambulance brought in two separate trucks and buses that can be used to mass evacuate people. While crews worked to resolve the leak, E-M-S stood by.

“What we like to do is be prepared 5 to 10 minutes in advance so we have everything ready so if we did have to move them, we had everything staged for the route out of the building.”

It is the second gas line strike in two weeks. Not anything compared to last summer, when so many gas lines were hit, work on cable burying actually stopped. A contractor doing work for Mid-Continent Cable struck the gas line.
