ND Game and Fish on the lookout for a mountain lion near Mandan

(WDAY TV) - North Dakota Game and Fish think there's a mountain lion roaming the banks of the Heart River, west of Mandan. A number of sheep have been killed. But as of now, there's been no sighting of a mountain lion.

Game and Fish say the hunt started about 3-weeks ago, when a research sheep of the USDA was killed. 4-cameras have been placed on trails near the river. So far there have been no mountain lions, but plenty of coyotes.

Still, Game and Fish doesn't think it's a coyote.

“The kill pattern was completely unlike a coyote attack. Typically coyotes will attack at the throat of an animal. This attack was right at the back of the neck. Massive damage to the subcutaneous tissue and even damage to the vertebrae, and that is typical of a mountain lion attack.”

8 sheep have been killed. The flock is being counted everyday to make sure they're all accounted for.
