For two weeks, 17 local teens spend 8 hour days with various local contractors, who volunteer to train the kids in construction, excavation, masonry, plumbing and more.
They also conduct interviews with the high schoolers. Its good practice and some, who are old enough, get jobs. The 13 year old program is usually all males, but this year Rachel Gehrke is learning what it takes to be an architect.
“I figured at first a lot of people looked at me and thought, it's a girl, but then I showed up sometimes so it's kind of fun.”
A 500 dollar scholarship will be awarded to one student who plans to enroll in a construction related field at M state or NDSCS. All students get 3 college credits from M state.
