Fargo Police keep an eye out for downtown jay walking

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Fargo Police are keeping a close eye on unsuspecting people walking across the street when they shouldn't. With summer here, police are seeing more jay walkers.

Downtown is the biggest problem area. Broadway is dangerous for pedestrians. It's difficult for police to enforce jay walking laws, because they are focused on more serious traffic offenses.

Still, if caught, eight citations could be given at a cost of 20 to 100 dollars. Police can't remember when that happened last.

“It's the officers’ discretion whether or not they want to take enforcement action on that. It's not to say that the officer doesn't stop and talk to that person. Who knows, maybe the person's intoxicated and might be a public safety hazard themselves by crossing the street where they shouldn't be.”

All but one of the citations are non-criminal. Jay walkers can be held accountable if they cause a crash.
