Park Officials: Best to buy firewood when you arrive

(WDAY TV) - It's likely with the long weekend that campgrounds will see plenty of campers. But before you leave the driveway, State Park officials want to remind you there is one item you may want to leave behind.

The only way to get firewood into a Minnesota State Park is to buy it from a DNR approved site. Park officials say to avoid confusion it's best to just buy the wood when you arrive at the park.

The restriction is to keep invasive species out of the park, most notable the emerald ash borer. Park officials say they never want to turn away campers or confiscate someone's firewood, but they'll do what it takes to keep the invasive species out.

"Fines are kind of a last resort for us. We typically don't like to do that, but we can if we need to."

Park officials want to remind people most wood you see at places like gas stations will not pass here. Even if it does, USDA certification it does not mean it's certified by the DNR.
