Memorial Day event at Ft. Snelling draws thousands

FORT SNELLING, Minn. (AP) — Memorial Day services at Fort Snelling have drawn thousands of people, including veterans from World War II to modern conflicts.

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar told the crowd of her recent visit with local troops in Afghanistan. She says no matter how many Thanksgivings or Christmases they've missed they never viewed their service as an obligation or inconvenience.

Chris Schaefer enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 2003 and served in Iraq. He told KARE-TV he's proud to be a veteran and proud to serve.

His cousin enlisted with him and also went to Iraq. Kyle Anderson still bears scars from a roadside bomb.

But he wasn't thinking of his own injuries Monday. Instead he looked at the markers of those who went before him and said, "Thank you."
