Western ND oil boom challenges law enforcement
Williston, ND (WDAY TV) - The oil boom in western North Dakota is a challenge for law enforcement. Police say with the flood of new workers from out-of-state, crime is on the rise.By: WDAY Staff Reports, WDAY
While there hasn't been a major rise in violent crime. There are more alcohol-related offenses, like DUI's and bar fights. That mean the number of people spending time in county jails has also increased substantially.
Even if people are arrested, many times they don't spend much time behind bars because good-paying jobs mean money for bail.
"A large majority of the people that we're arresting have the cash on them to post bond at the time. We've had bonds during weekends that have been $15,000 in cash and bonds."
Officers say in the past the jail normally had 4 or 5 people in it. Now, they average between 40 and 50 inmates.
