Veteran injured by road side bomb gets his independence back
Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - You are going to see more of Staff Sgt. Eric Marts around Fargo-Moorhead. The veteran who served with the guard in Iraq lost his sight following the explosion of a road side bomb. After months of re-hab, he is not only home in Moorhead, but has found a companion. A four legged guide dog named Deacon. After just days of training, the two are inseparable.By: Kevin Wallevand, WDAY
On the street corners of Broadway in downtown Fargo today, Staff Sgt Eric Marts is getting to know his independence. That freedom is coming in the form of a friendly black lab who has become Eric’s eyes.
“Like having a child, I knew one was coming, but not if it was a boy or girl or what kind it was. I didn't know if I should buy cigars or biscuits.”
Trainer Eric Loori of Freedom Guide Dogs brought Deacon to Moorhead for an intensive two week training here rather than Eric having to leave his home for a training center out of state.
“Especially soldiers like Eric. He has been away from home. For 23 months in Iraq and away for rehab. It is like he doesn't need to go away again and this is where he is going to use that dog. In Fargo-Moorhead, so it is much better to bring the service to them.”
It has been a long road for Eric, recovering and re-habbing from losing his sight from the roadside bomb. Now home, he is trying to learn how to function in the world he now only remembers seeing.
“I’m relieved to have more independence. My family is great, but it is nice to help me. I can do some things without the person and one of the kids.”
And it’s not just the streets of Fargo-Moorhead where you will find Deacon and Eric. They are also coming out to the mall, more people, but no fear of stop lights and traffic.
Eric is eager to learn more with Deacon. The two are unafraid and after days of being together, it appears that Team Marts is a perfect match; courage and perseverance walking beside a loyal lab.
“Amazing, in the Army we train with a buddy and you entrust your life with that soldier. Deacon is my new battle buddy. I put my life in his hands getting around town."
The groups Air Compassion and Freedom Guide Dogs make it possible for veterans to get dogs like Deacon along with the training.
