Scam circulating around North Dakota

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says a scam offering to lower credit card interest rates for a fee is circulating around North Dakota.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says a scam offering to lower credit card interest rates for a fee is circulating around North Dakota.

Stenehjem says the illegal prerecorded messages "spoof" legitimate telephone numbers belonging to innocent North Dakota residents and businesses. That means the number that shows up on the caller ID of the person being targeted is not the number of the scam artist.

Stenehjem says the scam has resulted in some angry calls to the legitimate owners of phone numbers used by the scam artists.

Parrell Grossman, director of the attorney general's consumer protection division, says the fraudulent companies further victimize people who most need legitimate help.
