Bus driver charged with 2 counts in boy's death

WALKER, Minn. (AP) — The Cass County prosecutor has charged a school bus driver with two misdemeanor counts in an accident in march that killed a 6-year-old Pine River boy, but declined to file more serious charges.

WALKER, Minn. (AP) — The Cass County prosecutor has charged a school bus driver with two misdemeanor counts in an accident in march that killed a 6-year-old Pine River boy, but declined to file more serious charges.

According to the complaint, 74-year-old John Maine, of Pequot Lakes, stopped to let Evan Lindquist off and saw him cross in front of the bus. But it says Maine became distracted by other children and turned around to deal with them, then failed to see the boy was still in front of the bus.

Cass County Attorney Christopher Strandlie says the law does not support felony or gross misdemeanor charges. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor.

Maine's attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Pine River is about 20 miles north of Brainerd.
