YWCA used federal funding Congressman Earl Pomeroy helped secure to expand programs to help homeless women and children find housing. In the first quarter of 2009, the YWCA's 65 person shelter was overcrowded with an average of 71 people. During the same period of time this year, the average is 61.
The YWCA director says at the rate their spending money, to keep up with the high demand; she believes funding will run out by the end of this year.
“This is working and needs to be exported across the country and needs to be supported. It's cheaper to help people avoid homelessness than to become homeless. It also is much better for the families.’
Republican Rick Berg is running against Pomeroy. His campaign says he also plans to support YWCA's expanding programs and that one of the reasons Berg is in the house race is to make sure money in Washington isn't wasted, so it can go to programs like this.
