6th graders at Cheney Middle School took the pledge as a part of YWCA's "Stand against Racism" program which aims to raise awareness that racism still exists.

U.S. District federal court judge Ralph Erickson talked about stereotypes and prejudices. He says this is an important age to explain these challenges, which strain relationships and sometimes cause violence.

β€œAn inability to communicate arises out of this sort of prejudice where people tend to see people as objects rather than the persons they really are, and it's that kind of objectification of people that really leads to a lot of the problems that we see in court.”

The YWCA partnered with 21 organizations across the F-M area to host activities related to racism awareness.
