Taxes may go up in Fergus Falls to help pay for ice arena

Fergus Falls, Minn. (WDAY TV) - To pay for a new ice arena in town, higher taxes could be coming for people living in Fergus Falls.

By handing the bonds this way, the city's administrator says it allows leaders to move forward, without bringing the issue to the voters.

That's because bonds would be issued by the Port Authority. City leaders say the tax would come be between 50 and 55 dollars for people living in a home worth 120 thousand dollars. Leaders say this arena is something the city needs, and that's why they continue to push for it.

“But I think that the council, as a whole, really felt that it was a good project to do, regardless of how the opposition maybe felt about timing.”

The city council will vote on the issue at this Monday's meeting.
