MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A federal jury in Minot has convicted a New Town man of voluntary manslaughter in a fatal stabbing last fall.

Authorities say Marcus Lone Bear Jr. killed Preston Young Bird on Oct. 15, 2009, in rural New Town following an argument spurred by excessive drinking. He initially was charged with murder.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Volk said that Lone Bear acted with a callous disregard for human life.

Defense attorney Orell Schmitz told the jury that Young Bird and his client were cousins and best friends. He said Lone Bear did not act with the malice required for a murder conviction.
