Garage and shed destroyed by out of control grass fire

Georgetown, Minn. (WDAY TV) - A warning from authorities: don't let the young green grass fool you; the region is still extremely dry. A Georgetown homeowner found that out the hard way this afternoon.

Fire crews from Felton, Dilworth and Perley were called to the Joe and Betty Richards residence. An afternoon of burning grass and leaves quickly got out of control. The fire spread to a garage and shed on the property. Both structures are a total loss.

Authorities don't believe any vehicles were lost, just some tools and other items stored in the shed.

“We're kind of in a dry season right now so it really doesn’t take a whole lot and I think it kind of surprises some people how dry it really is. Even though the grass is getting green there's a lot of dead stuff in there and it just kind of got to the shed and shed and garage burned down.”

The Richards family was hit by tragedy earlier this month when Joe's brother was killed in a tractor accident. Clayton Richards died after his tractor rolled into a ditch near Kragnes. He was fixing a flood damaged road at the time.
