NASCAR Star to race at the West Fargo Fairgrounds
West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Imagine playing catch with Brett Favre, skating with Wayne Gretzky, or throwing B-P to Joe Mauer. Something similar will happen in West Fargo this summer. NASCAR star Tony Stewart will be racing at the West Fargo Fairgrounds.By: Dylan Wohlenhaus, WDAY
The Red River Valley speedway today, is a far cry from hosting a race just yet. With some changes to the track and a few friends in town, it is attracting at least one big name in NASCAR racing this year.
Donny Schatz: "You know, he offered to come up here and race. He said he'd come up here and we would have a Tony Stewart night."
Two time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart will step away from his number 14 Chevy Impala and in to a late model on June 23rd at the speedway.
Donny Schatz: "Its big for this area, we don't get people like him. NASCAR racers in this area like this."
Donny Shatz who races for Tony Stewart’s race team and is a four time World of Outlaw champion himself asked Stewart to come up and race for a night, Shatz says Stewart has already done his homework.
Donny Schatz: "He's looked up the facility, he's looked up to see how big the track is and he's called and asked some questions and I said well you might as well throw that out because were changing all that."
The track right now is under-going some changes, changing the track from half mile to 3/8 mile, also adding more lighting. And Stewart is just another exciting add on for both fan and driver.
Danny Schatz: "They're all either Tony Stewart admirers or haters; they are all going to want to race with Tony".
Whether you’re a Tony Stewart fan or just a fan at the races, this year's plans aim to bring the excitement back to the speedway. The first race of the season is on May 26th.
