FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The endorsed Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate says defeating Republican Gov. John Hoeven will be a monumental task, but he says it can be done.

North Dakota Democratic convention delegates voted Saturday to support Tracy Potter for the Senate race.

Potter and Hoeven will be competing to succeed Democrat Byron Dorgan. Dorgan isn't running for re-election after 18 years in the Senate.

Potter is a Bismarck state senator and the director of the Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation. He is a veteran political activist and former deputy state insurance commissioner.

Hoeven is running for the Senate in the middle of his third term as governor.
