ND Demo chairman: Welcome tea partiers with coffee

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Democratic chairman wants state convention delegates to welcome tea party demonstrators on Saturday with a few kind words and a cup of coffee.

Opponents of the federal health care overhaul bill have scheduled a rally Saturday afternoon outside the Fargo Civic Auditorium, where North Dakota Democrats are holding their convention this weekend.

At the start of the Democratic convention Friday, party chairman Mark Schneider asked delegates to extend a warm welcome to the demonstrators. He says they're exercising their free speech rights.

Schneider says Democrats won't back down in their support of the health care bill — which he calls the most significant social legislation since Medicare.
