BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State Rep. Merle Boucher (boo-SHAY') of Rolette says he will seek the Democratic nomination to run for agriculture commissioner.

Boucher, the state House minority leader, has served in the House for 20 years. He says leaving was a hard decision to make but he's excited to take the "next step" and seek a state office.

State Democrats are holding their nominating convention in Fargo this weekend. No other Democrat has announced plans to seek the right to challenge Republican Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring.

Gov. John Hoeven appointed Goehring to the job last April when Democrat Roger Johnson resigned to become president of the National Farmers Union. Before that, Goehring ran twice against Johnson and lost both times.
