Parishioners pump water so funeral can go on

GARDNER, N.D. (AP) — Parishioners of a tiny church in the eastern North Dakota town of Gardner on Monday worked to pump floodwaters from a submerged parking lot so a funeral could go on as planned.

But the pastor of Nora Lutheran Church says the burial for the elderly woman likely will have to wait weeks because the adjacent cemetery is swamped with water from the swollen Red River.

Pastor John Jorgensen says funeral services for the woman are slated Tuesday. He says her grave will be dug beside her dead husband's when the water recedes.

The wrath of the north-flowing Red River continued Monday after cresting in Fargo a day earlier. The Red spilled over into Gardner just a few hours after it reached its watery zenith in Fargo, some 20 miles upstream.
