FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Fargo officials are telling residents to make sure their sump pumps don't freeze as the weather in eastern North Dakota drops ahead of expected Red River flooding.

The river is expected to crest on Sunday at 20 feet above the flood stage, meaning the water could threaten low-lying homes and streets.

The weather has also been getting colder and more windy. The high on Friday was forecast to be 31 degrees Fahrenheit.

Fargo officials said Friday that homeowners should keep their sump pumps from freezing and watch the sandbag dikes in their yards to make sure water doesn't seep through them.

Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker (WAH'-lah-kehr) says the city has a quarter of a million sandbags in storage that are ready for use if needed.
