Arrest made after a fatal Wyndmere bar shooting

Wyndmere, ND (WDAY TV) - A Wyndmere, North Dakota man is dead and another is in jail tonight, after a fight and gunfire at the Four Corners Bar. 46-year old Steven Rowland is in the Richland County jail being held on charges he shot and killed long time Wyndmere resident Gordy Vosberg who is in his late 50's.

Everyone knew Gordy Vosberg here in Wyndmere. Friends who went to high school with him years ago, still stayed connected with the friendly construction worker.

“He was a real good guy.”

“Friendly, he was a real likeable guy.”

And so it baffles everyone as to why at the Four Corners Bar in Wyndmere last night, police say Steven Rowland shot and killed Gordy.

“If it had been Gordy, he would have been in the middle trying to break it up because he didn't want anyone to get hurt. And he was always there to help everybody and friendly you know, so.”

Richland County Deputies thought they were responding to a simple bar fight, but once they arrived on scene and saw all the commotion, they knew something had gone terribly wrong.

“Earlier in the evening, there was a discussion between he and the deceased and then the bartender was trying to diffuse the whole thing and we are trying to piece it all together again.”

Those who know the suspect say he was upset because attempts to buy this bar had recently fallen apart. A fight with the owner last night escalated, Rowland left and then came back with the gun. It is unclear who Rowland was after, but tonight it is the family of Gordy Vosberg that is grieving. A judge today set Rowland's bail at 5-million dollars.
