SPIRITWOOD, N.D. (AP) — Great River Energy has unveiled plans for a $300 million biomass energy plant near its coal-fired power plant at the Spiritwood Industrial Park near Jamestown.

The biorefinery is expected to go online by 2015, producing ethanol primarily from wheat straw.

Maple Grove, Minn.-based Great River Energy is developing the plant and the Danish company Inbicon is providing the technology. Great River is still looking for an operator for the biorefinery, which will be called Dakota Spirit AgEnergy LLC.

Waste steam from the coal-fired plant will be used to generate electricity and heat for the nearby Cargill Inc. malt processing plant and the Dakota Spirit AgEnergy plant. Great River has been looking for a second steam host since plans for a proposed corn ethanol plant fell through.
